Peace River, Northern British Columbia
TThe Peace River in Northern British Columbia is another river 'tamed' by dams and threatened by more plans for even more dams:
"B.C. Hydro says it wants to go ahead with a $2.1 billion hydroelectric project that would see thousands of hectares flooded along the Peace River. The controversial Site C Dam is part of a package aimed at boosting British Columbia's long-term supply of cheap hydroelectricity.
"An earthfill dam would be built across the Peace, about seven kilometres southwest of Fort St. John.
"B.C. Hydro
documents submitted to the utilities commission say 25 families living in farms
along the Peace River would require relocation. Aboriginals are concerned that
habitat loss along the river would decrease the moose population, which is a
staple of their diet."
