White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), Roadkill, BC
Roadkill... It is always tough to see an animal that clearly had the life snatched out of its body by an impact from a car. Sometimes they still look as if they could stand up and run or fly away just like that, but sometimes they are just really clearly plainly dead. There's no way of saying which is worst to witness, but I can say that seeing this deer was terrible. Almost everything was wrong with it... All four legs were completely broken, with the bone poking right through the skin in many places. The eyes were already eaten by ravens and/or crows and during the impact the animal must have almost completely bit off her own tongue. I passed her twice, once in the afternoon and once late in the evening and as you can see the legs have been moved around quite a bit. It would seem likely that some other animals did that, but it did not really look as if anything was eaten away.
