Red squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus)

Red squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) feeding on pine cone in the snow. Banff National Park; Alberta; Project Canada; Arthur Sevestre

Red squirrels are active all year round. On all but the coldest days, during which they stay in their nests, you can find them by listening for their amazing array of sounds and noises and by looking for their telltale signs. This image shows a well-used feeding place. The squirrel would run off to find a pine cone, run back to this branch and take the cone apart completely to get to the seeds. The heaps of cone leftovers are sometimes really impressive!
