Cinnamon black bear (Ursus americanus), Kootenay National Park, BC

Cinnamon black bear (Ursus americanus) grazing in Kootenay National Park, British Columbia. Project Canada, Arthur Sevestre.

Black bears come in a wide range of colours from black to almost white, including a beautiful cinnamon brown, as demonstrated by this individual. It further demonstrates how much of the diet of bears (black and grizzly) consists of plant material. This differs somewhat in different areas and throughout the seasons, but it can come up to 95% of the total diet. Berries, roots, twigs and buds are very important, but so are insects and don't forget honey. A black bear will not easily be tempted to hunt if the prey can't be easily caught.
